ABOUT US
The organisation was set up in 2002 as a registered charity (1101495), funded by the Department for International Development as part of their initiative 'Enabling Effective Support' for the global dimension in the region's schools. There are similar projects running in every UK region, each with its own Strategic Plan written in response to local and regional needs.
The Regional Coordinator is Averil Newsam, who is based at the Esh Winning Eco-Learning Centre (The EWE Centre) at Esh Winnning Primary School near Durham City. Until she moved to Esh Winning in October 2003, Averil was coordinating the work of Teesside One World Centre and this Centre is now providing advice on teaching and learning materials to the region's Schools Library Services.
In the North East we are building the capacity of small community based organisations, already working with communitites in Africa, Asia and Latin America to enable them to support teachers.
Global Citizenship and Education for Sustainable Development offer good opportunities to develop a global dimension in the curriculum but we encourage teachers of all subjects to explore the global connections.
Teaching and learning materials have been written to support all subjects and in this region we are working with the Schools Library Services in each LEA so that teachers can borrow global dimension resources from their usual source.
