Welcome to One World Network North East Supporting schools to bring global issues into the classroom
Who are we?
One World Network North East (OWNNE) works with teachers, advisers and other
educators to bring global issues into the curriculum. We offer support on all
aspects of the global dimension through training, advice, workshops and CPD. We
also run a range of projects for schools to develop specific areas of their curriculum.
What is a Global Dimension?
The global dimension incorporates the key concepts of global citizenship, conflict
resolution, diversity, human rights, interdependence, social justice, sustainable
development and values and perceptions. It explores the interconnections between
the local and the global. It builds knowledge and understanding, as well as developing
skills and attitudes. Download the DCSF's guidance document for more information.

I hope that the new school year has started well for you all. Here are a couple
of things to look out for this term:
- Last chance to get involved with Global School Partnerships – a programme that offers funding for schools to visit a partner schools in
Africa, Asia, Latin America or The Caribbean. See www.dfid.gov.uk/globalschools for more details.
- The first time that the Global Student Forum is coming to the region. It’s a great opportunity for sixth form students to
learn about current global issues and active global citizenship. See www.globalstudentforum.org/newcastle for more details.
This year we’ve seen events such as the Arab revolutions and the Japanese Tsunami
unfold. In the summer we witnessed the English riots and already this term the
anniversary of 9/11. Young people are affected by what they see and hear. However,
helping your pupils to make sense of these world events and to understand how they shape their world and future isn’t always easy. OWNNE
can also support you with this by delivering:

OWNNE has been supporting schools in the North East to develop a global dimension
in the curriculum since 2002. Over that time we have worked with over a quarter
of the region’s schools. An external evaluation carried out earlier this year found that:
“In those schools where OWNNE has had engagement there has been a definitive
increase in the level of Global Dimension included across the school’s curriculum”
Our funding from the Department for International Development came to an end
in the summer, and although we previously offered some of our services free of
charge to schools, there is now a charge for our advice and support. We are still
committed to supporting schools in the region. For example, we can:
- deliver bespoke half-day or full-day CPD on cross-curricular dimensions or community
cohesion
- facilitate staff meetings to work with teachers to develop a global school partnership
- provide 1-1 support for revising schemes of work or planning off-timetable days
- work with students to audit attitudes and values to assess the impact of global
dimension work
We will also continue host workshops and conferences and bring global dimension
projects to the region. If you are thinking about how you can develop the global
dimension, please contact us and we can discuss how we can best support you.
